26th Annual Gathering of Ohlone Peoples

Ohlones from several tribes will share their culture, including music, song, dance, and stories. They'll discuss contemporary cultural involvements, and demonstrate basket, jewelry, soaproot brush, and dogbane string making. Visit a more than two-thousand-year-old village site, play an Ohlone game, try making fire without matches, or make a miniature tule boat. For more info, see here.

Simply Culinary Delights from Food Scraps

Set aside 2 1/2 hours to prepare delicious food from "ugly" vegetables or fruit on the brink of demise. Learn with a culinary chef how to minimize waste in your kitchen. The pulp from freshly juiced carrots and beets will serve as the base for tasty veggie-burgers. Whipping up a dip will turn food scraps into flavorful bites instead of compost. Doomed pears and apples will turn into an autumn crisp in no time. We will have a small feast together. All vegetarian! $7 for Ecology Center members, $10 for non-members. Register here.

Attend a free zero waste living workshop with the author of Sustainable Home, Christine Liu! Afterwards we will be making DIY toothpaste so be sure to BYO clean & dry jar. Cost for the toothpaste ingredients will be $2. Christine will go over the basics of sustainable living, and will be available to answer any questions from her experience. A quintessential exploration of the history of the recycling and Zero Waste movement, Introduction to Recycling offers both newcomers and seasoned professionals a critical overview of current concepts, practices and terminology. This 3-day crash course begin with a presentation in the Environmental Learning Center about recycling and composting in San Francisco, a walk through the Transfer station, a visit to the studios of the Artist in Residence Program, and a trip to Recycle Central where all of the blue bin materials are sorted.
